I am Jeanne-Marie Derrick.
I make art that I like, want to live with and look at - otherwise I would not make it. Making art is similar to picking out a gift for someone special. Knowing someone well enough to choose just the right thing. When I make a painting or a sculpture, I’m gifting myself.
The act of creativity births something that hasn’t already existed. I make it because I want it. I really don’t care much if anyone else likes it. Although, to know me, is to appreciate my art. You are peering into my mind, my heart and my soul. And if you don’t like that, you probably won’t like me.
Some of my sculptures play with the friction between innocence and destruction. I use objects from nature, objects found in the garbage, anything I find inspiring.
The tropical themed oil paintings I made when I moved to Anguilla B.W.I. full time. Nature was so big after living in NYC. Nature was my muse.
I am also an ayurveda practitioner and Iyengar yoga instructor for over four decades. You will find references to yoga, consciousness and movement in some pieces.
We are free to create anything we want including whatever life we want to live. While you have the time, make something for yourself. Do something special just for you. Gift yourself something that has never existed before. There’s a reason why art can be pricy and priceless, art is a gift to the world.
