I am Jeanne-Marie Derrick.
Making art is a pursuit of putting something in the world that doesn’t already exist.. I do not make art to just add another object to the world but to express myself and share ideas and visions. I am interested in art as a spectacle, something that makes you look and maybe change a perspective. What happens after is up to the individual.
My sculptures play with the push and pull between innocence and destruction. With some of the sculptures I use objects found in nature to objects found in the garbage. I try to enhance another way of seeing our personal impact and interaction in the world.
The tropical themed oil paintings I made when I moved to Anguilla full time. Nature was just so big after living in NYC for my adult life. When I lived in AXA, I swam in the aqua waters, watched sunsets over the ocean, walked under the coconut trees… Nature was my muse.
I am also an ayurveda practitioner and Iyengar yoga instructor for over four decades. There are references to yoga, consciousness and movement in some pieces. As creatives, we have the opportunity to create anything we want and that includes whatever life you want.
